SBA Eastern Penn.’s 2013 Annual Small Business Awards Event Is June 5th

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Philadelphia District Director David Dickson and Philadelphia’s NBC10 anchor and consumer reporter Tracy Davidson will present the 2013 Small Business Award Winners at the annual “SBA Day at the Ballpark” event on June 5. The awards ceremony begins at 10 a.m. with a luncheon at “Chickie’s & Pete’s” restaurant at 1526 Packer Ave. followed by a 1:05 p.m. Phillies game at nearby Citizens Bank Park. The event is open to the media.

“As a regional and local recognition of the Presidentially-designated National Small Business Week award winners, this event is an opportunity to recognize the achievements of small business and its advocates in Eastern Pennsylvania,” said Regional Administrator Natalia Olson-Urtecho, who will be the event’s keynote speaker. “Every year the award winners honored at this event have truly distinguished themselves and represent the very best that the eastern Pennsylvania small business community has to offer.”   

Businesses being honored at the 2013 Eastern Pennsylvania Small Business Awards event: 

  • Philadelphia District Small Business Persons of the Year: David Mark Wise, II, President of G.S. Madison, LLC, Wyomissing, Penn. 1-800-GOT-JUNK, a full-service junk removal company that removes ensures and ensures responsible recycling, donation and disposal of unwanted items and furniture from homes, businesses, construction sites and more while Boxaroo, LLC, delivers and picks up rented durable plastic boxes for moving to make moving faster, easier, safer, and more environmentally friendly. 
  • Small Business Exporter of the Year Award: Zeigler Brothers, Inc., Gardners, Penn. Thomas R. Zeigler, Timothy M. Zeigler, Matthew P. Zeigler. Founded in 1935 and now in the third generation of leadership, family-owned Zeigler Brothers, Inc. continues to develop new and innovative technologies for specialty feed, focusing on aquaculture, pet, zoo and laboratory animal feed for bio-medical research. The company manufactures more than 300 products and exports to over 40 countries around the world. Funding through the Small Business Innovation Research grant to study the nutritional requirements of newly hatched marine finfish while exploring creative manufacturing methods for live feeds. *Philadelphia District, Region 3 and National Award Winner  
  • Small Business Development Center Excellence and Innovation Award: Widener University Small Business Development Center, Chester, Penn. Glenn McAllister, Director. Founded in 2007, Widener University Small Business Development Center SBDC is strongly committed to helping small businesses. One of 18 SBDCs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the center provides free and confidential consulting services to entrepreneurs as well as educational workshops for which we charge a nominal fee. With workshops open to all, consulting services are generally limited to for-profit ventures. *Philadelphia District and Region 3 Award Winner  
  • Family-Owned Business of the Year Award: Gresham’s Chop House, Hawley, Penn. Thomas G., Paul J., Joseph R. Regenski, Owners. Gresham’s Chop House restaurant has been in the Regenski family for four (and approaching five) generations. Scenically located on Lake Wallenpaupack, the restaurant features delicious steaks, seafood, Italian specialties, and light fare. 
  • Minority Small Business of the Year: Advantage Contracting, Inc., Billy O. Cromedy, President, Philadelphia, Penn. A fully insured and bonded HVAC/sheet metal contractor, Advantage Contracting specializes in the fabrication and installation of sheet metal ductwork primarily used for heating, ventilation and air conditioning in various commercial and industrial applications and provides HVAC equipment for both large and small project needs. 
  • Minority Small Business Person of the Year: Ivelisse Alemany, Chief Executive Officer, Markant Corporation, Carlisle, Penn. An 8(a) woman-owned, small disadvantaged business that performs professional, technical and web-based information technology, logistic and financial services for the federal government, Markant Corporation is a technical company focusing on niche computer industry disciplines, providing support for information assurance and security, computer systems integration, program management, database application development and software development, help desk services, information technology trainings, documentation and technical audits and reviews. 
  • Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year: Plato’s Closet, Exton, Penn., Carol Topolski, Owner. was ranked 17th of 360 Plato's Closet franchises in 2012, this resale shop specializes in recycling brand-name teen and young adult apparel and accessories for customer looking for sell their trendy, used items or purchase brand-name and designer styles at reduced cost.
