CHARLOTTE – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has named the owner of Immunoreagents, Inc in Raleigh the North Carolina Exporter of the Year for 2013. Dr. Ann Black was nominated for the award by Briles Johnson, Director of Women’s Business Center of North Carolina at The North Carolina Institute for Minority Economic Development.
Immunoreagents works in antibody development to be used in vaccines and diagnostic kits for the detection of a variety of human diseases.

The criteria for the award include: Increased sales, profits and/or employment due to exporting, creative overseas marketing strategies and introduction of unique trading relationships, products or services.
ImmunoReagents began with six products in its first year, and currently offers over 2000 products to the research and diagnostic marketplace. Regional distributors offer these products not only in the US and Canada, also in 22 countries in Europe and Asia. The company experienced a 240% increase in export sales growth during 2012.
The firm has taken advantage of different SBA programs to grow the business and enhance their export efforts.
Black worked with Alex Viva, Export Counselor at the North Carolina Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC). Alex helped her create an export strategy, evaluate pricing and logistics. This helped Immunoreagents become more efficient when shipping internationally.

Black used an SBA State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) Grant attend international BioSpain, biotech conference in Bilbao. She made valuable connections and increased her distribution capacity.
Dr. Black started ImmunoReagents in 2005 after an the biotech firm she was working for closed down. She has Ph.D. in Cell Biology and Anatomy and has been working in antibody production and purification for over 30 years.
