National Small Week June 17-21, 2013
Bakersfield, CA – The Small Business Administration Fresno District Office has awarded Gabriela Mello the 2013 Central California Financial Services of the Year Award. The award is presented by SBA as part of National Small Business Week celebrated nationally June 17-21, 2013.
The Kern County Hispanic Chamber and Mission Community Services Corporation, as part of National Small Business Week, will be hosting the award presentation and luncheon for Gabriela Mello at the Marriott in Bakersfield on June 18th beginning at 11:30 am. Mello was selected for this prestigious award due to her outstanding advocacy efforts and her commitment to support entrepreneurs in business entrepreneurship. Gabriela was nominated for the award by the Mission Community Services Corporation, Women Business Center which provides serves in Kern, San Luis Obispo and Monterey Counties.
Carlos G. Mendoza, District Director of the Fresno SBA Office said, "Gabriela is a role model for all small business owners. Not only is she a tremendous asset as a mentor, but she is also a leader in our business community. We are honored to present Gabriela Mello with the 2013 Central California Financial Services of the Year Award."
Upon hearing of her selection for the award, Gabriela said, “I’m honored by the recognition and truly humbled by the great work of the Small Business Administration and nonprofit organizations like Mission Community Services Corporation. It’s my pleasure to advocate for small businesses and to support entrepreneurs in our local communities and I am grateful to the SBA for recognizing me for something that I love to do.”
David Ryal, Executive Director of Mission Community Services and Women Business Center said, “Mello has been a real advocate for small business in the territory that she has overseen. She has been extremely supportive of the work of the Women’s Business Center. She has been active with the Fresno CDFI, which helps to fund small business. She has used her position to help financially support a variety of organizations that support entrepreneurship through the years.”
Mello has an extensive background in business lending. Starting as a bank teller she has worked her way up in the financial world to manage several Valley bank branches and has worked as a Community Relations Officer to promote programs for small business assistance. She currently serves as Community Development Officer at Wells Fargo covering five counties in Central California and the Central Coast.
As a longtime advocate for small business Mello believes that education is the key to success and financing is critical for the overall success of small business entrepreneurs. Mello has been instrumental in promoting financing literacy for small, emerging minority owned businesses and volunteers for many events and workshops throughout the State.
