SBDC of Excellence, Family-Owned Business, Small Business Exporter, and Entrepreneurial Success Awards also bestowed
SAN JUAN, PR – The Puerto Rico & Virgin Islands district office of the U.S. Small Business Administration today honored Oscar Quiles, president of Pentaq Manufacturing Corp., with the 2012 Small Business Person of the Year Award, during the closing ceremonies of Small Business Week in Puerto Rico.
Quiles got his start in the military apparel and occupational uniform manufacturing business in the ‘90s, when he worked for his family’s company, Caribbean Needlepoint Inc. In 2003, with support from the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company, Quiles bought a manufacturing plant that was about to close and leave 50 people unemployed. Additional support from the Workforce Investment Act Program and from the state government’s Work and Nutritional Assistance Program helped Quiles keep all employees on payroll. Later, with assistance from the Puerto Rico Small Business & Technology Development Center’s San Germán office, Quiles obtained an SBA-guaranteed loan.
In 2004, Pentaq Manufacturing Corp. was born, specializing in commercial military clothing, military uniforms and related products. Today, the company is certified under the SBA’s 8 (a) Business Development and Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) Zone programs, and is a Self-Certified Disadvantaged Business. It has performed contracts with federal agencies such as the Department of Defense and U.S. Coast Guard. Sales for the year 2011 were $14.3 million, representing an increase of 348 percent. From 50 employees in 2003, today the company employs 218 people.
“Oscar Quiles’s sacrifices, dedication and commitment have led him down the road to success, as demonstrated in the jobs he has created and his contributions to Puerto Rico’s economic development,” said SBA Regional Administrator Jorge Silva-Puras. “The SBA is proud to recognize his outstanding achievements and the examples he is setting for our island’s younger generation.”
Along with Quiles, the SBA honored the San Juan Regional Office of the Puerto Rico Small Business & Technology Development Center Network with the SBDC Service Excellence & Innovation Center Award; Carlos Purcell, Richard Cuebas and Carlos Báez, partners of Integra Design Group, with the Small Business Exporter of the Year Award; and Edward Feliciano and José De León, president and vice president of KCS Enterprises, respectively, with the Entrepreneurial Success Award.
Septix Waste Inc. took home the Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year Award at the district and regional levels. Husband and wife team of Gary Santos and Lymaris Pacheco, president and vice president, respectively, purchased the company from Santos’s father in 1999, and began new developments at the family-owned enterprise, creating 32 jobs and generating nearly $2 million in sales in 2011.
The SBA also bestowed the following awards to participating lenders that during fiscal year 2011 provided $84.8 million in financing under the agency’s 7(a) Loan Guaranty program: Platinum Award to Banco Popular de Puerto Rico; Gold Award to Banco Santander Puerto Rico; Silver Award to Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria; and Bronze Award to Economic Development Bank for Puerto Rico. Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria also received a Star Award for highest growth in dollars lent and Banesco received the Special District Director’s Recognition as New SBA Lender. In addition, Oriental Bank received the Third-Party Lender Award for its outstanding achievement in the SBA’s 504 Loan program, and PYMES Financial Partners received the Certified Development Company of the Year Award.
