Embodying the Goddess: A New Mexico Black History Month Success Story

For the first twenty years of her amazing career, Dr. Kamala Easton was intensely involved in the academic world as both a researcher and administrator. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley and a PhD from University of California at Los Angeles. Dr. Easton’s accomplishments include a position as an energy healer/member of the UCLA Medical Center’s Complementary Medicine Pediatric Pain Program and operating her own successful healing practice in Malibu, California.  Kamala has even appeared on the Public Broadcasting System and the Discovery Channel.

In 1999, as Kamala’s practice grew, she became increasingly aware of the spiritual needs of her clients. She traveled to India to enhance her own personal growth while simultaneously creating and building a clothing business and exporting her products to the United States.  At that time she had employees both overseas and in the U.S. Her clothing business flourished and so did her interest in and commitment to spirituality.

Unfortunately, while in India she suffered an injury to her back and had to refocus her energy on healing herself.  Her clothing business languished and she eventually closed it.  Through this experience, Kamala realized that she could use her evolving spirituality, expertise and education to teach others how to heal themselves.

In 2008, Kamala began working with WESST, an SBA-designated Women’s Business Center, located in Santa Fe, NM. Bette Bradbury, WESST’s Northern New Mexico Regional Director, and her staff assisted Dr. Easton in developing a profitable pricing strategy as a means for placing monetary value on her educational and spiritual knowledge and personal experiences.  They engaged in intense brainstorming sessions and provided her with constructive feedback and the opportunity to explore growth opportunities.  Over time, Kamala has attended numerous WESST workshops on business growth and social media where she enhanced her social media skills and developed a professional media kit and a website.  She uses these tools to generate business worldwide. Referrals from satisfied clients have kept the business thriving.  Kamala now employs two part-time assistants to schedule her engagements and book her travel due to her growing speaking calendar.

WESST has also assisted Kamala in redefining her target audience to be able to identify individuals most likely to benefit from her workshops and presentations.  Kamala continues to return to WESST for technical assistance in order to reach a broader consumer marketplace.  As a result,Yoga events have emerged and are a perfect fit, since Kamala is also a certified Kundalina Yoga teacher.  Most recently, she presented at the Austin, TX Yoga festival and spoke at the Women of Wisdom Conference in Seattle, WA.  As her market awareness expands, she plans to develop other products that enhance the client’s exploration of their spirituality.

Kamala is also an author. She embraces and shares her extensive educational and spiritual experiences via the written and spoken word.  In late 2012, she published her first book, “Autobiography of a Yogini: A Black Woman’s Love Affair With her Guru.”  Currently, she has two new books in progress.

Recently, Kamala has been filmed for a proposed national television series focused on healers in the Santa Fe area.  She has also been featured on a number of radio talk shows. One of her goals is to open a healing/teaching center focusing on women who were abused as children.

It has been a challenge for Dr. Easton to transform her strengths into a commercially viable business and retain her core beliefs.  She has overcome physical injury and major financial setbacks.  Her business, Embodying the Goddess, has evolved from clothing manufacturer, retail sales and motivational speaking to presenting her spiritual workshops entitled,  “Embodying the Goddess” and “Embodying Spirit: Journey towards Enlightenment.”  She has combined her medical education and hands-on expertise as an Intuitive (a person who uses a spiritual self-help approach in teaching others how to heal themselves) to teach clients how to spiritually transform themselves to enjoy life and experience higher levels of success in all arenas.
