PHILADELPHIA -- The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Philadelphia District Office announced the District’s 2012 Small Business Award Winners, as well as its Minority Small Business Person of the Year. SBA’s Philadelphia District Director, David Dickson, will officially present these winners with their awards at the annual “SBA Day at the Ballpark” event June 7, 2012. The event starts with a 10 a.m. awards ceremony and luncheon at sports-themed restaurant “Chickie’s & Pete’s” 1526 Packer Avenue location, followed by a 1:05 p.m. Phillies game at nearby Citizens Bank Park. The event is open to the media.

 

“As a local commemoration of the Presidentially-designated National Small Business Week, this event is an opportunity to recognize the achievements of small business and its advocates in Eastern Pennsylvania,” said Dickson. “Every year the award winners honored at this event have truly distinguished themselves and represent the very best that the eastern Pennsylvania small business community has to offer.” 

 

Businesses to be honored at the 2012 Eastern Pennsylvania Small Business Awards event are:

 

Small Business Persons of the Year: Michael and Jennifer Mancuso, Owners

Figliomeni Drug Stores, Carbondale, Penn.

*Winner of Philadelphia District and Region 3 Award*

First opened in 1929, family-owned Figliomeni Drug Store includes a conventional retail drug store, closed-door pharmacy services, and home health care products.

 

Entrepreneurial Success: H. William Longacre, President

Perkiomen Motorcoach, LLC, Pennsburg, Penn.

For more than 50 years, this tour and chartered-bus-travel company has offered multi-day trips, one-day trips and chartered trips, as well as group travel services.

 

Small Business Exporters of the Year: Albert G. Zvarick, President and CEO; John G. Zvarick, Executive Vice President, Trident Engineering and Procurement, P.C., Souderton, Penn.

Trident is a defense contractor providing engineering services, construction, mechanical contracting, demilitarization, vehicle leasing, office services, equipment leasing, and ISP services. Trident operates in Southwest Asia, Europe, and Africa.

 

Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year: Karen H. Boyd Rohde, Owner, Bredenbeck’s Bakery and Ice Cream Parlor, Philadelphia, Penn.

Bredenbeck’s is a Bakery and Ice Cream Parlor operating since 1889. Family proprietorship began in 1954 with the current owner’s grandfather and father.

 

Financial Services Champion of the Year (Philadelphia District and Region 3):

M. Jane Schwartz, President

Small Business Funding Group, Inc., Langhorne, Penn.

Small Business Funding Group, Inc., helps entrepreneurs obtain small business financing and facilitates lender use of SBA loan products. On a volunteer basis, Ms. Schwartz counsels small businesses on obtaining financing, champions legislation facilitating small business lending, and contributes to small business financing articles.

 

Home-based Business Champion of the Year: Rita J. Lacey, Managing Member

Close the Loop, LLC, Kunkletown, Penn.

*Winner of Philadelphia District and Region 3 Award*

Ms. Lacey teaches the unemployed and underemployed how to build websites, facilitating their start-up of home-based online businesses. She wrote e-book “Building a Business Website, on a Shoestring Budget.”  Through her own home-based business, Ms. Lacey markets products made by small manufacturers from re-cycled materials.

 

2011 Eastern Pennsylvania Minority Small Business Persons of the Year: Neftali (Lee) Arroyo, CEO, & Brian K. Lebeau, Sr., COO, Client Solution Architects, LLC, Mechanicsburg, Penn.

CSA is a professional services firm that helps clients plan and execute procurement and acquisition processes related to life cycle asset management, supply chain management, program/project management, training and enterprise performance management.

 

Veteran Small Business Champion of the Year: John DeBella, Radio Host

102.9 WMGK-FM, Philadelphia, Penn.

Mr. DeBella’s advocacy for veterans includes: hosting an annual radiothon to raise funds for and awareness of veterans’ issues and organizing a suit drive to properly outfit veterans to achieve their employment and business-related goals.

 

Minority Small Business Champion of the Year: Angela Dowd-Burton, Executive Director Office of Economic Opportunity, City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Penn.

Under Ms. Dowd-Burton, OEO restructured to better help minority-, woman-, and disabled-owned small businesses win city of Philadelphia contract work. Over that time, the numbers of those businesses registering for and being awarded that work increased.

 

Women’s Business Center of Excellence: Women’s Business Development Center, Philadelphia, Penn.

The WBDC helps individuals to start new businesses and grow existing ones. While the center is dedicated to the economic empowerment of women, services are open to all individuals.

 

Young Entrepreneur of the Year: Maggie Calpin, Owner

Nibbles and Bits, Scranton, Penn.

Driven by her business ownership goal, Ms. Calpin earned her B.S. in Business while working full time, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Still in her 20’s, she then purchased Nibbles & Bits, a gourmet basket and gift business, which she continues to operate.
