SAN ANTONIO, TX - The name says it all: Dependable Health Services, Inc. (DHS). Joe Urby founded his company in 1996 to provide medical and non-medical staff to governmental agencies. On January 14, 2008, DHS was approved as an 8(a) certified company with the U.S. Small Business Administration to be serviced by the San Antonio District Office. Dependable Health Services, Inc. (DHS) knows that 8(a) certification does not guarantee business but did realize that it provides a vehicle to market the company to the federal government. It’s the marketing that has helped government customers know DHS. They market by regular onsite visits to military installations around the country. Traveling on a regular basis meeting their employees and contracting officials keeps the company on top of the performance of contracts. These alliances have expanded into a Mentor-Protégé Agreement with two Joint Ventures. The Joint Ventures formed a winning team that won two large dollar awards with the U.S. Air Force and Army. The first DoD contract awarded was to provide medical personnel to the Wounded Warrior Brigade at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. This contract inspired DHS to work harder and form alliances with other companies. Today, DHS is in about 20 different military treatment facilities around the country. SAN ANTONIO, TX - SANA International is a San Antonio-based company engaged in the export of transportation and industrial equipment and machinery globally. A former U.S. Marine Corps, Rudy Uribe started his company Recruiting Force, LLC, dba Recruit Veterans in 2006 with only personal savings.  Recruit Veterans is an SBA 8(a) certified service-disabled veteran-owned firm headquartered in Austin, Texas.  It provides program/project management, engineering, information technology and administrative staff augmentation, payroll, direct-hire placement and recruiting services in support of the federal agencies, prime contractors to the federal government and commercial businesses throughout the United States. Additionally, Recruit Veterans performs background checks and drug screenings on all of the employees that are placed with their clients. They also offer a full package of employee’s benefits. 

In November 2008, Recruit Veterans was accepted into SBA’s 8(a) business development program which allowed him to penetrate the federal market. This program taught him to understand how to do business with the federal government and to pursue federal contracting opportunities for economic development and business growth.  The firm has been awarded over $5 million dollars in 8(a) set-asides from various federal agencies. Recruit Veterans chose the government contracting arena and staffing industries because the firm wanted to hire military veterans and place them in positions with their clients once they exited the military. The firm was fortunate to receive a staffing opportunity with a large prime contractor and even though, Recruit Veterans knew nothing about staffing or subcontracting, they quickly adapted their business model to the situation.  As a result, they were able to bring in revenues on a consistent basis and gain experience as a subcontractor which enable the firm to become a prime contractor.  

One obstacle the firm overcame was being able to provide clients with personnel with security clearances.  They have since met a military veteran who owns his own staffing company with a Top Secret clearance and offered to sponsor Recruit Veterans and now, the firm has the capability to hire and place personnel with security clearances.

Recruit Veterans received continued business development and technical assistance through the SBA 8(a) Business Development Program, SBA 7(j) Training Program, HUBZone Program and free counseling from SBA resource partners such as, the UTSA-Small Business Development Center, SCORE and Women’s Business Center, which has essentially shaped and solidified the very foundation of this firm.   In 2009 and 2010 Recruit Veterans received two SBA backed guaranty loans from Broadway Bank, an SBA participant lender, under the SBA Patriot Express Loan Program for a total amount of $200,000 revolving lines of credit and on June 2012, approved another loan under the same SBA program for the amount of $200,000 revolving line of credit.  Today, Recruit Veterans employs 65 employees and sales of $3.2 Million, approximately.  The firm’s success is attributed to the SBA 8(a) Business Development Program, his Business Opportunity Specialist Stephanie Rapp and many others who along the way have been mentors and facilitators.

Recruit Veterans has a strong record of performance. Armed with knowledge, experience, staffing resources and a vision to place military veterans in staffing positions once they exit the military, they are prepared to meet and exceed the needs of customers at all times.  Someday, Recruit Veterans would like to provide international services.  Mr. Rudy Uribe works very hard to maintain the quality of his firm and also takes time off to spend with his family.  He also makes time to pursue volunteer activities that support and honor veterans groups.  His advice to other firms - “Stay focused, have enough capital to keep your business running for a year and stay on top of financials”.
