SAN ANTONIO, TX - The name says it all: Dependable Health Services, Inc. (DHS). Joe Urby founded his company in 1996 to provide medical and non-medical staff to governmental agencies. On January 14, 2008, DHS was approved as an 8(a) certified company with the U.S. Small Business Administration to be serviced by the San Antonio District Office. Dependable Health Services, Inc. (DHS) knows that 8(a) certification does not guarantee business but did realize that it provides a vehicle to market the company to the federal government. It’s the marketing that has helped government customers know DHS. They market by regular onsite visits to military installations around the country. Traveling on a regular basis meeting their employees and contracting officials keeps the company on top of the performance of contracts. Joe Urby states, “SBA has supported DHS since 2008 when we applied for the 8(a) Business Development Certification Program. Business Opportunity Specialist Debra Dimando has constantly guided and overseen the company’s development. The University of Texas at San Antonio - Contract Resource Center and the Minority Business Development Center have also helped in locating and winning contracting opportunities. DHS has experienced tremendous growth because of the SBA 8(a) BD program.” Dependable has formed strategic alliances with key organizations. These alliances have expanded into a Mentor-Protégé Agreement with two Joint Ventures. The Joint Ventures formed a winning team that won two large dollar awards with the U.S. Air Force and Army. The first DoD contract awarded was to provide medical personnel to the Wounded Warrior Brigade at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. This contract inspired DHS to work harder and form alliances with other companies. Today, DHS is in about 20 different military treatment facilities around the country. Their success in contracting and their excellent performance has won them the following awards: Emerging Federal Contractor of the Year 2008-San Antonio Business Opportunity Council (SABOC); Fast Tract Company 2011-San Antonio Business Journal; July 2011 Minority Federal Contractor of the Year-Minority Business Development Agency; and 2011 Minority Business Development Center UTSA. DHS’s contributions to the community speak for itself as past sponsors for different community organizations, such as Special Olympics, and Haven for Hope. Today, DHS focuses on helping the military community with the wounded warrior program by fundraising for The Warrior Road Trip Network in April 2012. This program provides excursions to our nation’s heroes wanting to spend the day in the great outdoors, on a lake, and travel to places like Colorado to hunt. Dependable Health Services adds to their success by employing the most dedicated, professional, inspired and trained staff in their industry. This enables DHS continued: Growth, Growth, Growth. SAN ANTONIO, TX - SANA International is a San Antonio-based company engaged in the export of transportation and industrial equipment and machinery globally. Since its inception in 1994, President/CEO Jorge Sanchez has guided SANA International to become a million dollar exporter that has expanded well beyond its initial market of Mexico and now includes regular clients in twelve countries in Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. Approximately, 98% of company sales are exported. It focuses primarily on the sale of equipment to the oil and gas industry, marine, food & beverages and renewable energies. SANA International places strong emphasis on after sales service and providing solutions to its clients' industrial and transportation equipment problems. SANA International and its sister logistics company, United Supply Chain has grown from one employee in 1994 to 28 employees, all of which are 100 percent export-dependent. SANA International has worked closely with SBA resource partner, the UTSA-International Trade Center to identify potential buyers and relevant trade shows for different products in multiple countries to help the company expand and grow. The company regularly exports to the following countries: Abu Dhabi, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Panama, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. Mr. Sanchez recognizes that the key to export success in many parts of the world is based on relationships and that a degree of trust must be established. This requires face-to-face meetings on a regular basis. Consequently, Mr. Sanchez and other employees are constantly traveling the globe to establish and cement relationships with new and potential customers. SANA International's strategy is not simply to export equipment, but problem solving. It will work with customers to provide a range of equipment from different suppliers to provide a solution to a given industrial problem and to simplify purchasing for the customer. This may require teaching customers the most efficient way to use a product and to suggest ways in which equipment can be better maintained. SANA also provides considerable after sales support, including providing spare parts and repairs. SANA International sponsors interns from San Antonio College and universities. These sponsorships have helped the company hire qualified employees. It has also sponsored a number of foreign students studying in San Antonio with the aim of increasing employee knowledge of the student’s countries and markets, as well as providing a positive experience for the students. Mr. Sanchez has served as a speaker at conferences on how to do business in San Antonio and has presented on export topics to organizations and universities in San Antonio and Mexico. Mr. Sanchez is a member of the Free Trade Alliance, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Rotary International, San Antonio World Affairs Council, San Antonio Museum of Art, The Nature Conservancy, San Antonio Petroleum Club, as well as a children's advocate for them to achieve better opportunities through continuing higher education. RECRUIT VETERANS – A COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE
A former U.S. Marine Corps, Rudy Uribe started his company Recruiting Force, LLC, dba Recruit Veterans in 2006 with only personal savings. Recruit Veterans is an SBA 8(a) certified service-disabled veteran-owned firm headquartered in Austin, Texas. It provides program/project management, engineering, information technology and administrative staff augmentation, payroll, direct-hire placement and recruiting services in support of the federal agencies, prime contractors to the federal government and commercial businesses throughout the United States. Additionally, Recruit Veterans performs background checks and drug screenings on all of the employees that are placed with their clients. They also offer a full package of employee’s benefits.
In November 2008, Recruit Veterans was accepted into SBA’s 8(a) business development program which allowed him to penetrate the federal market. This program taught him to understand how to do business with the federal government and to pursue federal contracting opportunities for economic development and business growth. The firm has been awarded over $5 million dollars in 8(a) set-asides from various federal agencies. Recruit Veterans chose the government contracting arena and staffing industries because the firm wanted to hire military veterans and place them in positions with their clients once they exited the military. The firm was fortunate to receive a staffing opportunity with a large prime contractor and even though, Recruit Veterans knew nothing about staffing or subcontracting, they quickly adapted their business model to the situation. As a result, they were able to bring in revenues on a consistent basis and gain experience as a subcontractor which enable the firm to become a prime contractor.
One obstacle the firm overcame was being able to provide clients with personnel with security clearances. They have since met a military veteran who owns his own staffing company with a Top Secret clearance and offered to sponsor Recruit Veterans and now, the firm has the capability to hire and place personnel with security clearances.
Recruit Veterans received continued business development and technical assistance through the SBA 8(a) Business Development Program, SBA 7(j) Training Program, HUBZone Program and free counseling from SBA resource partners such as, the UTSA-Small Business Development Center, SCORE and Women’s Business Center, which has essentially shaped and solidified the very foundation of this firm. In 2009 and 2010 Recruit Veterans received two SBA backed guaranty loans from Broadway Bank, an SBA participant lender, under the SBA Patriot Express Loan Program for a total amount of $200,000 revolving lines of credit and on June 2012, approved another loan under the same SBA program for the amount of $200,000 revolving line of credit. Today, Recruit Veterans employs 65 employees and sales of $3.2 Million, approximately. The firm’s success is attributed to the SBA 8(a) Business Development Program, his Business Opportunity Specialist Stephanie Rapp and many others who along the way have been mentors and facilitators.
Recruit Veterans has a strong record of performance. Armed with knowledge, experience, staffing resources and a vision to place military veterans in staffing positions once they exit the military, they are prepared to meet and exceed the needs of customers at all times. Someday, Recruit Veterans would like to provide international services. Mr. Rudy Uribe works very hard to maintain the quality of his firm and also takes time off to spend with his family. He also makes time to pursue volunteer activities that support and honor veterans groups. His advice to other firms - “Stay focused, have enough capital to keep your business running for a year and stay on top of financials”.
Recruit Veterans ranked #681 on the list of the 2011 Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Companies and the firm has been recognized as a small business leader in job creation and business development by the UTSA-SBDC.
