BOSTON – Unique Steps Dance Academy, of North Attleboro, has been named the winner of the 2012 Massachusetts Micro-Enterprise award according to an announcement by Robert Nelson, Massachusetts SBA District Director.
The Micro-Enterprise award is presented annually to an outstanding business that has received SBA assistance and has a three-year track record and five or fewer employees. Unique Steps Dance Academy was judged on four basic criteria: growth in net worth, sales and number of employees over the last three years, response to adversity, contributions to the community, and demonstrated creativity and/or commitment to a social mission in hiring policy, buying local, etc. The dance academy was nominated for this award by Mechanics Cooperative Bank Assistant Vice President Philip Vecchio.
Unique Steps Dance Academy was founded by Melissa Medeiros in 2009. The dance academy offers a variety of dance classes to different age groups and can accommodate up to 300 students. It aims to provide children with positive reinforcement and helps students learn how to express themselves and build self-esteem. Melissa studied dance as a child and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance from Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts as well as a Master of Fine Arts in expressive therapies. Melissa expresses her passion for dance and community service every day in the dance studio, in writing and illustrating her new children’s book titled “Sometimes I Just Want to Dance,” and in her work at Community Counseling of Bristol County.
“With this award, SBA recognizes the important role that micro-enterprises like Unique Steps Dance Academy play in growing our economy and contributing to our local communities,” said Nelson. “I hope that by shining the spotlight on Unique Steps, this micro-enterprise will serve as a model and inspire other small businesses in Massachusetts.”
Unique Steps Dance Academy owner Melissa Medeiros will be honored at an SBA awards celebration along with the other Massachusetts Small Business Week 2012 winners at an event at Fenway Park on June 6, 2012.
