SBA Seeks NJ Small Disadvantaged Businesses to Apply for Agency’s 8(a) Program

Advisory Date: Wednesday, June 26, 2013

NEWARK, NJ----The U.S. Small Business Administration New Jersey District Office is looking for small socially and economic disadvantaged firms to apply for its 8(a) Business Development Program.  So says SBA’s New Jersey District Director Al Titone.

“This is a perfect program for small disadvantaged firms to gain access to federal government contracting opportunities,” said Titone. “A firm that is controlled at least 51 percent by socially and economically disadvantaged owner can receive sole-source contracts up to a ceiling of $4 million for goods and services and $6.5 million for manufacturing.”

According to Titone, the New Jersey district office is need of companies that have been in business two or more years and have experience in the following areas: custodial services, food service, landscaping, pest control, trucking, moving & storage, and armed & unarmed guards.

“There is also a big need for specialty construction trades,” said Titone. “We’re also looking to add small business owners to the program who also specialize in plumbing, HVAC, electrical, paving and roofing.  In addition to those areas of expertise, we are also looking to manufacturers of electronic related items or machine shops.”

During fiscal year 2012, 48 New Jersey 8(a) firms received 127 contracts worth $218 million. Companies accepted into the program are given a total of nine years to participate in the program. Participation in the program is divided into two phases over the nine years: a four-year developmental stage and a five-year transition stage.

“This program is helping thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs to gain a foothold in government contracting,” said Titone. “Adding small firms that have specific specialties will only help us to secure even more contracts for New Jersey companies who qualify to participate in SBA’s 8(a) program.”
