“The SBA is excited to collaborate with the AARP to reach this very important small business sector in the startup market,” said SBA Richmond District Office Director Jayne Armstrong. “The SBA has a number of resources for entrepreneurs over the age of 50 to start up a small business. We have a network of Small Business Development Centers, Women’s Business Centers, and SCORE chapters, who can all provide mentorship, planning assistance and financial assistance.”

A growing number of individuals over the age of 50 or “encore entrepreneurs” are turning to small business ownership. It is estimated that one in four individuals ages 44 to 70 are interested in becoming entrepreneurs, and 63 percent of Americans are planning to work during retirement. SBA and AARP will provide the training and mentoring services older entrepreneurs need to successfully start and grow businesses and create jobs. For more information on encore entrepreneurship, go to http://www.sba.gov/encore.

The Small Business Administration Richmond District Office works with its local resource partners – SCORE, Small Business Development Centers, and Women's Business Centers – to provide technical business counseling to entrepreneurs at every stage of small business development.
