About Alabama District Office
The Birmingham District Office serves all 67 counties located in Alabama. The Birmingham District Office is located off of Lakeshore Drive at 801 Tom Martin Drive in Suite 201, Birmingham. Hours are from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. There are currently 11 employees on staff with SBA in Birmingham and Mobile. You can reach the SBA District Office at (205) 290-7101.
Over the years, the SBA has developed many small business loan and assistance programs, special outreach efforts and initiatives to aid and inform small businesses. The following describes briefly all the services and information available through this office:
Financial assistance for new or existing businesses through guaranteed loans made by area bank and non-bank lenders. The Birmingham District Office assists several hundred new and existing businesses each year by providing financial assistance through the 7(a) and 504 loan programs. Free counseling, advice and information on starting and/or expanding a business is available through a network of Small Business Development Centers (SBDC), the Service Corps of Retired Executives Association (SCORE), and the Women's Business Centers (WBC). Numerous training events are conducted throughout the state by the SBDC, SCORE and the WBCs - some require a nominal registration fee.

Assistance to businesses owned and controlled by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals through the Minority Enterprise Development Program.
An International Trade Specialist is available to assist businesses interested in exporting.

Alabama Business Profile
Alabama is located at the center of the eight-state Southeast regional market, and has a population of approximately 4.4 million.
The top five industries are health services; eating and drinking places; business services; food stores, and wholesale trade-durable goods.
In 1999, Alabama had 86,007 businesses with employees; 97.3 percent of the businesses were small businesses. In addition to the number of employer businesses, Alabama also had 122,575 self-employed persons in 1999, for an estimated total of 208,582 businesses.
According to the Center for Women's Business Research, as of 2002, there are an estimated 83,032 majority-owned, privately-held women-owned firms in Alabama, employing over 125,000 people and generating over $12.7 billion in sales.
According to the latest Bureau of the Census data, the number of Black-owned firms, including part-time firms, totaled 19,077 which is approximately 19% of the total.
During the same period of time, the number of Hispanic-owned firms, including part-time businesses, totaled 2,919, which is approxiamtely 3%.
There has also been a marked increase in the number of businesses owned by Asian and Pacific Islanders, American Indians, and Alaskan Natives. The number for this group grew from 1,777 in 1992 to 3,278 in 1999.
