Alan Steinberg Appointed Office of Advocacy Region II Advocate
Will Work Closely with Small Business, Associations, Legislators and Local Governments
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Alan J. Steinberg, who has served New Jersey state government in a number of capacities, most recently as executive director of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, is the new Office of Advocacy Regional Advocate for the federal government’s Region II, covering New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. He will be the direct link between small business owners, state and local government agencies, state legislators, small business associations, and the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration.
“Alan Steinberg is a great addition to our team,” said Thomas M. Sullivan, Chief Counsel for Advocacy. “Small business owners on the East Coast have an outstanding advocate in Mr. Steinberg. His experience as an advocate for small, women-owned, and minority-owned businesses will allow him to immediately contribute to the Office of Advocacy’s role as the government office that stands between small business owners and unnecessary or overly burdensome government regulations,” he continued.
Mr. Steinberg’s experience includes serving as assistant commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Commerce and Economic Development, where he formulated policies and legislation relating to small, women-owned, and minority-owned businesses, international trade, economic development, and tourism. He crafted the Business Employment Incentive Program legislation, which has helped create more than 30,000 jobs in the state. He has also served as senior policy advisor with the New Jersey Assembly Majority Office and as a member of the New Jersey Commission on Ethical Standards. Prior to his work with New Jersey government, Steinberg served as counsel to a number of private sector companies.

Regional Advocates help identify new issues and concerns of small business owners. They also monitor the impact of federal and state policies on small business at the local level. They work closely with local government officials, state officials and legislators, and the Chief Counsel for Advocacy to develop programs and policies that help, rather than hinder, small business growth.
