Description of Rank , Bank Size, and Other Terms Small Business Lending

RANK is an aggregate measure of the decile rankings of four indicators of small business lending activity by state (i.e., ratio of small business loans of less than $250,000 to assets, ratio of small business loans to total business loans, dollar amount and number of small business loans). A statistic of 40 indicates that the bank ranks in the top 10 percent in all four categories of small business lending. A value of 4 indicates the bank ranks in the bottom 10 percent of all categories.

BANK SIZE reflects the asset size class of the financial institution. Five bank size groups are defined in this study. They are:

SBL$ refers to dollar amount of small business loans outstanding (in thousands of dollars). Small business loans are for loan size under $250,000.

SBF refers to "small business friendly" bank as defined by the Office of Advocacy.
