Getting Business Updates E-mailed to You

By ZanetaB
Published: March 23, 2010

Business.gov launched an e-mail subscription service in January that allows us to send small business information to subscribers who chose to opt-in to the service. The nearly 20,000 subscribers receive weekly updates on topic areas ranging from starting and expanding a business to staying compliant, and more.

Why E-mail?

We decided to use an e-mail service because we are aware of the correlation between e-mails and business owners’ use of the internet. For this reason, we decided to offer a subscription service for people who prefer to get information in emails instead of reading web pages.

Here is a preview of the e-mail topic areas subscribers can choose from:

Starting a Business – includes topics relevant to starting up, as well as information on necessary licenses, permits and registrations.

Finance, Money & Taxes – focuses on business loans, grants and venture capital, managing business credit and debt, and paying small business taxes.

Growing a Business – resources to help improve and expand a business, including emergency preparedness, energy efficiency, hiring employees, import/exporting, and selling to the government.

Staying Compliant with Regulations – includes legal topics such as advertising law, employment and labor law, environmental regulations, workplace safety and health, and patent, trademark and copyright requirements. In addition to legal regulations, these updates also feature other relevant compliant topics like business insurance and privacy and security concerns.

Subscribers can also choose to receive e-mail updates specific to a particular state, or a particular business type, such as Self-Employed or Home Based. Or, they can subscribe to updates targeted to Minority, Women, Disabled or Veteran Owned Businesses.

What We Send

Within each topic area e-mails communicate directly relevant information on:

• New pages or features on Businesss.gov

• New or updated laws and regulations from federal, state and local government agencies

• Relevant information from our blogs and community forums

How Are We Doing?

Since the launch, we have sent a total of 26 email updates with information on different topic areas. We are noticing that subscribers to certain topic areas are receiving more updates than others. For instance, if you signed up for starting a business, home-based or self-employed, and loans, grants and venture capital topics; you will likely have received more updates than subscribers of any other topics. Subscribers of specific states, for example, may only receive quarterly updates.

For those of you who are already subscribers, is this the kind of communication you were expecting from the subscription service? If you are not yet a subscriber, does this service interest you?

As with all features, tools, and gadgets we offer business owners, we are always interested in feedback. We’d like to hear what you think and suggestions on how we can improve what we are doing so let us know.
