Idea Exchange: Share Your Energy Saving Tips

Published: March 23, 2010

Lately, sustainability and green business has been a hot topic amongst small businesses. By conserving energy, not only do small businesses reduce their carbon footprint, but also reduce their energy consumption and their operating costs. In our monthly Idea Exchange, where we pose questions to the Community about various topics, as well as the content, features or services provided by Business.gov, we asked members to;Share Your Energy Saving Tips-

Her-s what our members had to say about how they greened their small business:

Environmentally Friendly Power Sources and Products

Waste Reduction

  • Turn Off Unnecessary Appliances. According to rchrdwellington, a simple action like turning off the lights is an easy and effective way for reducing the amount of wasted energy. Unplugging computers and turning off appliances that you are not using will also reduce energy consumption. Learn more energy saving tips for lighting at Business.gov.
  • Share Office Supplies. shoplet mentioned that he hardly ever uses a stapler or tape, so why have one for each person in the office? By sharing office supplies, small businesses can reduce overhead costs and save the environment at the same time.
  • Recycle. Recycling materials and supplies reduces unnecessary waste. Goodprinter suggested recycling ink cartridges is a small yet significant step towards reducing waste. Learn more about waste reduction practices at Business.gov.
  • Reduce Paper Waste. SundownSlim acknowledges that businesses use (and waste) a considerable amount of paper. By adjusting the margins for printed documents and defaulting printers to print double-sided, businesses can cut down on the amount of wasted paper. He also suggested posting reminders and office competitions as incentives for employees to actively minimize the waste of paper. Read about how to use paper efficiently and save money by going paperless at Business.gov.

There are loads of cheap ways to improve home energy efficiency and save some money. First of all it's absolutely free to turn the boiler thermostat down a degree and this could save you as much as £65 a year. With Government rewards for investing in renewables, although they'll set you back a bit in initial investment, they make perfect sense as there's a lucrative earning to be made.
Hi everybody. Goto youtube.com and do a search for a magna motor. There is a man in Australia that has invented a motor that requires a car battery to start it up and can run forever after starting it. Here's the kicker...It produces 24kw of electricity. That's enough to power a house! It's the size of a large microwave oven. Imagine never having to pay an electric bill again. It can also be used for cars. Imagine never having to spend money on fuel again or have to charge it. Cars with UNLIMITED RANGE! This technology is here but certain people are trying to keep this info from you! The energy crisis could be over easily but those who value money over everything else are keeping you in the dark. Dont take my word for it. Look it up!
Matured clean product for energy saving is wind turbine, solar heating system and heat pumps. Government should provide more bonus on replacement of energy saving products. Such as solar system, Wind turbine, heat pump.Economical method is the best way to encourage people to pay attention to the energy saving and try energy saving products. Auto shut off on computers at work. I had to set them up at my work. Most other work place don't worry about this. Just a thought.

The last company I worked for was terrible about leaving on unused lights and appliances. There was no push to save energy, until we had to meet an energy curtailment last summer. I mean.. everyone should be able to do there part! Thanks for the tips! ----Libby Rollinsinsuladd.com/paint-additive.html ---This post was edited to remove a commercial link.
