Meet Harry Menta, Public Information Officer in the New Jersey District Office

When a friend or family member asks what you do to help small businesses, what do you say?

I try to give them the three Cs explaining that the SBA provides assistance to small businesses through Counseling, Capital and Contracts.  Most people get it.

What’s your favorite thing about what the SBA does for small businesses? Harry Menta, Public Information Officer

My favorite thing is seeing how our programs affect small business owners.  It never gets old when you walk into a business that received SBA assistance.  It’s a wow factor when I see a thriving business, with employees creating innovative products and services that are successfully marketed and distributed to customers. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to see that our agency is making a big contribution to small businesses.

Is there a particular small business “success story” that comes to mind when you think about how the SBA helps people?

I am partial to manufacturing,  so a company called Ridgid Paper Tube Company of Wayne, NJ is the one that comes to mind.  Ridgid Paper Tube Corporation is a manufacturer of paper tubes and custom packaging. The company’s products are utilized by some of the biggest corporations in the world to the smaller business entrepreneurs. The following are just some of the companies that rely on Ridgid Paper Tube Corporations products:

Nabisco, Kraft, Procter & Gamble, Exxon Mobil Corporation, Roche Pharmaceuticals, Worldlink, Edison National Historic Site Museum, Diabetes Research Institute, United States Post Office and many others.

The company has about 25 employees and is known for its innovative designs and artistic retail packaging solutions.

Tom Horsburgh, the owner of Ridgid Paper Tube, has received a few 7(a) loans over a period of time to help purchase machinery and equipment. More recently he received funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  As a result of that funding, he lunched with President Obama in July of 2010 in a New Jersey Sub Shop where he and some other small business owners sat down and discussed the economy and how the SBA loan was helping his business.  So that was memorable for me.

Do you have any advice for entrepreneurs and small business owners out there?

It’s nothing that we haven’t all heard or preached to entrepreneurs. You have to start with a great idea. You have to have a passion for what you do.  You have to be driven and determined to succeed, and you have to have a plan in order to achieve your goals.

Anything else to add?

I just think that the SBA is more important than it has ever been.  Our programs are making a difference for those who still believe in and want to live the American dream.  With the support of SBA programs, anything is possible.

It is a great thing that SBA helps people to achieve their goals. I went to SBA.gov a while back and found that this organization was very helpful. Keep up the great work and keep helping those who want to become Entrepreneurs.
