There's no doubt about it, social media is now an essential part of how we engage with others, source information, and stay connected with family, friends and our favorite brands.

But social media marketing, and by this I mean using social media as another vehicle to connect with your customers and raise the profile of your business with them and others like them, is still a relatively new domain for large and small businesses alike. In fact, according to a December 2009 survey by research firm, Ad-ology, 46% of small business owners wish they knew more about social media!

Make Your Web Site Social and Searchable!

One major mistake that you want to avoid is thinking that your social media presence' whether i's a Facebook page or a blog' can replace a business Web site. It ca't and mustn't. For one thing, your Facebook page won't help you get found on search engines. Your Web site should remain your online hub for product and service information, lead capture devices, blogs, and your best bet for helping your business get found in online searches.

You are definitely right! The social media landscape is huge and constantly evolving; thus, to maximize its power you need to be updated with the changes and the best latest tools. Today, one of the best social media platforms is youtube. Youtube is the top 3 website in the world with more than 1 billion unique visits, over 6 billion hours of video are watched, 100 hours of video are uploaded, 70% of traffic comes from outside the US. It is localized in 56 countries and 61 languages. Imagine the number of customers that you will be able to tap using the power of Youtube. A social site is ultimately still a page on a social network website. It should never replace your main website, since you do not own the social network website. If the website suddenly goes down, or loses its popularity, you will have to start all over again.

Hi Caron, Thanks for putting together such a great resource for people to get started in Social Media.I agree that engagement is a key factor in any Social Networking strategy, yet it is still often overlooked.I've noticed some quite large corporations using the sites in the old fashioned way know as shout or push marketing. These pages are just pumping out information as though they were using traditional paid media the way TV and magazines do. This one way street style doesn't work on the social sites! Whilst you've covered some great points in this post, there is one part I disagree with.You've said your Facebook page won't help you get found on the search engines. This is not the case as a Facebook (fan) page ranks extremely well in the search engines and is a great addition to any SEO strategy.The same with blogs, in particular Wordpress ranks extremely well in the search engines and absolutely can be used instead of a website. Michaelé
