BusinessUSA Turns Two; Website Makes It Easier to Access Services

Today, BusinessUSA turns two years old.
On October 28, 2011, President Obama signed a memorandum aimed at making it easier for America’s small businesses and exporters to access government services. In the memo, the President cited a need to have “a government that wisely allocates its scarce resources to maximize efficiency and effectiveness, so that it can best support American competitiveness, innovation, and job growth.”
And so BusinessUSA was born. The site has come a long way since the President instructed federal agencies and departments, led by the Department of Commerce and the Small Business Administration to build BusinessUSA. Here are just a few of the highlights of BusinessUSA’s first two years.
Designed around your business, not government agencies: Redesigned in November 2012, BusinessUSA was completely remade to give users the opportunity to find programs and services that fit their needs, without having to know which agency manages the program. Entrepreneurs looking to get help starting their business can try our Start a Business tool. Established businesses interested in beginning to sell their goods overseas can use our Begin Exporting tool. Veterans looking for programs that can help them realize their dreams of owning a small business can use our Veterans Resources tool. And for businesses looking for information about the Affordable Care Act, BusinessUSA provides health care information based on your specific situation.
Expanded roster of resources available to help business owners: At launch, the site included 297 resources from federal agencies. Today, the site includes 2,575 grants, loans, training programs, and other helpful offerings from the federal, state, and local entities.
Seamless access on your desktop, phone, or tablet: BusinessUSA was one of the first government websites to recognize the new ways people were using the web. We wanted users to be able to take us on the go, and get their questions answered when they needed, where they needed. So we created a responsive design that offers the same, rich experience on your smartphone or other mobile device that you would get on a laptop or desktop computer.
BusinessUSA has grown up a lot in the past two years. Everything we’ve done has been to make it easier for entrepreneurs and business owners to navigate the federal government.
We’re proud of what we’ve done, but we’re not stopping there. So here’s to a great first two years and to many more years to come.
