It’s Nico with SBA’s Office of Communications and Public Liaison. This week I’m live blogging from the 29th Annual Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week conference in Washington, DC.
The welcome remarks have ended, and the conference has split into three separate tracks, with panels on contracting, financing and international markets.
After the presentation for Access to Contracts: Doing Business with the Federal Government, I caught up with Tiger Staffing’s Anthony Bryant. Here are some excerpts from our chat:
What does your business do?
We’re a staffing company based in Silver Spring, MD. We’re a Women-Owned Small Business(WOSB) and we’re about to graduate from the 8(a) program. We have worked on contracts with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Energy, and other agencies. We staff all kinds of service functions – it’s really from A to Z.
What do you like about the staffing industry?
Staffing gives a sense of satisfaction – you can hire talented professionals. Because we do background checks and rigorous hiring processes, we eliminate some of those steps for government agencies, so they can recruit talent in a more streamlined manner.
What are you looking forward to at this year’s MED Week?
Networking. There are actually very few small staffing companies like ours, and even less minority-owned ones – lots of the industry is occupied by larger companies. So we’re interested in finding opportunities for our smaller company; for example, subcontracting opportunities.
Sponsored by the SBA and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), MED week gives minority business owners from across the country an opportunity to learn about growing their business, accessing capital and new markets, hearing from top Administration officials, and networking with other business owners.
