Happy Small Business Week! It's Nate and Dan from SBA’s Office of Communications and Public Liaison. We're coming to you from live from the main event, where we’ll be live-blogging for the next couple of days.
We just ran into Rick McKeel of New Carbon Company, the Indiana State Small Business of the Year. He has grown his business from 31 to 76 employees from 2004 to 2010. We asked him what he’s planning to do here at NSBW:
Tell us about your business.
Waffles. We sell waffle [batter] to the food service industry. We provide the [waffle makers] free to customers as long as they use our product. That’s our model.
What are you most excited about here at Small Business Week?
We want to meet and network and talk to others. See what other secrets we can pick up, and share our story with others.
Has the SBA helped you?
We got help from the [North Central Indiana] Small Business Development Center in South Bend that helped us get a loan.
The Recession was tough for small businesses. How did you make it through?
I’ll tell you what I told someone else: We decided not to participate in the Recession. We believe in the power of positive thinking. There are opportunities out there, you just gotta find them. […] The last two years have been our best two years. […] We’ve created lots of jobs.
