When a friend or family member asks what you do to help small businesses, what do you say?

I always tell them that as a Business Development Specialist I come in contact with start-ups and existing small businesses. I provide them with information on the SBA’s programs and services in English and Spanish. I also let them know about the wonderful resource partners we have who are available to help them with free business counseling, management and technical assistance, training, assistance in finance, assistance with government contracts and more.
What’s your favorite thing about what the SBA does for small businesses?
One of my favorite things is to hear that a small business owner is living his/her dream. Another is when the small business finds the assistance they need from the SBA.
Is there a particular small business “success story” that comes to mind when you think about how the SBA helps people?
I believe all small businesses are success stories, but my favorite one is Gourmet Guru, Inc. founded in January 1997. This is a family-owned business that won an SBA award in 2011. They are a direct importer, producer/distributor and marketer of high quality natural and organic foods. Their customers have commented on the excellent service, support and innovative products they provide. Gourmet Guru was built in the Bronx to tap into the healthy-foods market and help people learn how to eat healthier. I also encourage other small businesses to think about becoming a potential award candidate during our annual “Small Business Week Award Ceremony” celebration for further recognition.
Do you have any advice for entrepreneurs and small business owners out there?
There is valuable information out there so I tell them to reach out, ask questions and don’t give up. I also encourage entrepreneurs and small business owners to visit our website at www.sba.govwhich offers a variety of free online business courses and lists a calendar of great business events.
Anything else to add?
I encourage you to visit and browse our website at www.sba.gov. If you are unable to find what you need please call us.
Meet the SBA is a series of features of SBA employees – both in Washington, D.C., and around the U.S. – who work every day to help small businesses grow and create jobs. Employees were nominated by their colleagues to be recognized during Public Service Recognition Week 2011.
