Recently, I participated in the 6th Annual National Hunger Seder at the U.S. Capitol. The event, organized by the Jewish Council for Public Affairs and MAZON, brought together Members of Congress, faith and community groups and other Administration officials for a model Passover Seder designed to raise awareness and inspire advocacy around the challenges facing seniors.
At the SBA, we are committed to the empowerment of all Americans, including our support of senior Americans. Too many are facing challenges of economic insecurity.
This month, the U.S. Small Business Administration and AARP have teamed up to host National Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Month. With a special focus on entrepreneurs over the age of 50, we are matching up “encore entrepreneurs” with successful business owners and community leaders for advice and assistance. Entrepreneurship can provide stability and a path to economic empowerment. It can also be a viable option in retirement.
Throughout the month of April, SBA District Offices, state AARP offices and SBA resource partners are hosting more than 100 events around the country. Events include speed mentoring, which allows mentors and entrepreneurs to share information for five-minute sessions, and mentor lunches for entrepreneurs to learn best practices from successful small business owners.
Senior entrepreneurs are one of the fastest growing groups of new business owners, and starting a small business offers an opportunity to use the knowledge and skills gained during a career towards creating a new business.
Now is a great time to explore the options. SBA has free online courses targeted at helping encore entrepreneurs get started. Go online to access SBA’s Encore Entrepreneur course or our Women’s Encore Entrepreneur course that offers free information on how to start a business for those over the age of 50.
