Western North Dakota Businesses Face Challenges and Opportunities

SBA has been holding White House Business Council Roundtables in rural communities throughout the Rocky Mountain region. In these open dialogs, participants often express the resilient, muted optimism of an independent citizenry recovering from an economic downturn. Small businesses in the region face a variety of challenges, but at the same time, they are drivers of economic growth and sustainable job creation.
I recently had the chance to visit Laducer & Associates in Mandan, ND. Laducer & Associates was chosen as one of the SBA100—one hundred firms that have created one hundred jobs since getting help from the SBA. The company started in 1985 with a four person staff. Now they have 350 employees, and are one of the leading employers in their region. As one of the nation’s largest Native American owned firms, their story shows how important SBA loans can be to a business’s growth. They are a great example of a North Dakota business that is growing and creating jobs thanks to the SBA.
Another way we can support the western North Dakota economy is by passing the American Jobs Act. This job creation plan will provide 20,000 North Dakota small businesses with payroll tax cuts so they can hire more workers, and $20 million in infrastructure investments in the state will create new opportunities for many small firms. Despite challenges, North Dakota’s small businesses lead the way in the region’s economy. SBA is committed to giving them the tools they need to keep growing, and the American Jobs Act will do just that.
