Hi folks, I just found this SBA site, so please excuse if topic is misplaced. It's a bit of a rant.Most years I have a small number of 1099-Misc forms to file, usually only 2 or 3.As far as I can tell, my options are to acquire and file the paper forms by US Mail, or to pay an e-file broker to file them electronically for me. Is there some direct, no pay, electronic option?My desire, of course is to fill the forms on-screen and file electroncially, directly to the IRS, no fee. I can then send copy to payee by email or print and send via USPS. My state does not have income tax or withholding, but where required, the copy to state should also be direct by email or concurrent from the IRS. One up and running model for this is the way employee tax forms and info are transmitted to the Social Security Admin. Another model would be for the IRS to offer a fillable, savable form which can be emailed directly to them.The IRS Publications and Forms warning that the downloadable 1099 form is not scannable is out ot date. Yes, printers could mess it up and make it hard to scan, but let's just skip the print/scan and file on-line, or by email of form filled on-screen. This can coexist with the IRS printed forms.I have sent this whine to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Would the appeal be more effective if sent to some other agency or place? A 1099-MISC is one of the few forms you cannot yet obtain or file online. You must still do it the old fashioned way by mail. It has been only three or four years that one could obtain a W-2 electronically, so 1099s may be in the works in the future.

You are, hopefully, correct. The IRS wants to receive these forms electronicaly and is working to make that happen outside of the eFile vendor system.
But I wonder if just waiting will let us see any changes. The vendors will likely lobby to prevent loss their exclusivity. The IRS is probably fairly happy with the current system - a few remnant paper filers and many electronic filers from the eFile vendors. All conjecture on my part, of course.
If this is a big issue, we users need to let the IRS know. But maybe I am the only one. The second part of my question remains: How do I (and others) effectively let the IRS know of the desire/need for improvement. Advocacy board? Senators and Repersentatives? Other? If anyone has experience or knowledge, please post.

You will need to call 1-800-TAX-FORM. This will connect you to the IRS direct where you can order the forms you need. These are the IRS printed documents that are scannable and acceptable by the IRS.

I know how to acquire and file the paper forms. Sorry if that was unclear in original post.
Anyone have info on no pay electronic filiing or where to effectively advocate a policy and technology change at the IRS?
Why should I have to pay a contractor to file required forms electroncially? Anyone else find this vexing?
