Alternative Energy Grants

Part of the stimulus packaged had alot of money set aside for Alternative Energy uses. Our grant writer looked over the new grants and after reviewing them we felt that some of them were aimed at giving money to specific firms/R&D sources. They had some very specific/peculiar requirements that seemed different that previous grants.

 

Is that something that is done or are we just reading something into the way the grants were written?

I am currently assisting a solar energy company that is pursuing two grants from the Dept. of Energy and one from the USDA, all funded by stimulus money. All federal grants are very specific in the information they require and how the information is presented. Other than SBIR grants, most start-up businesses don't qualify for federal grant funding. Most federal grants also require that you match the funds they award, something most start-ups are unable to do. The stimulus grants are aimed at helping grow the national economy. They include provisions requiring that you use U.S. made components in your products and that you create new jobs, as well as providing a product that will benefit the national interest in some way. Kreegs - Federal grants are not generally available for small businesses. You are correct - they are very specific and aimed at very specific industries. You may find the Small Business Cents blog about The Truth About Government Grants very interesting. Its follow up, Grants.gov - What's in it for Businesses also has great information on the reality surrounding federal grants. Thanks for contributing your observations to the community.
