Hello, I'm hoping someone out there can help me with this. I am a veterinarian. I was working as a full-time employee of a veterinary hospital up until last month. At this time, I quit my job at the hospital, and began working as an independent contractor for various practices in the area; i.e.- I fill in when the other vets are away on vacation, etc. We veterinarians call this 'relief' work- it's the equivalent of 'locum' work for people doctors :)
My question is...am I required to obtain my own business license or permit- either federal or state (California)? Or even locally (San Diego)? If anyone out there can give some insight, I would really appreciate it...thanks!

When you became an independent contractor you basically 'started' a veterinarian business and for that you must have all the permits for a business and additionally you need all your permits as a veterinarian. I find a nice article that might help you:

Business licenses are issued by local city clerk's or county clerk's offices, not by the state. Medical and professional services businesses are often exempt from the need for a business license, but a quick call to your local city clerk's office should answer your question.
As an independent contractor, you will need to file a business name and entity type, possibly obtain a sales tax permit, open a business bank account and pay quarterly estimated taxes on your earnings.
The California Secretary of State's website states:
Once the business entity is formed or registered with the California Secretary of State it must obtain the necessary licenses and/or permits.
The Secretary of State does not issue licenses or permits for business entities. Please refer to the CalGold (California Government: On-Line to Desktops) website for information regarding business license/permit requirements. CalGold's online database provides links and contact information to agencies that administer and issue business licenses, permits and registration requirements from all levels of government.

Being an independent contractor, a sole proprietorship is might be the easiest for you. One that page, you can see all the tax forms that are necessary for you to file and how to do it.
In regards to a business license or permit, you can check with California to see if you need them specific to being a veterinarian.
Another things that I would make sure is covered is insurance. I do not know if you have agreements with the veterinarians you are filling in for, but you make to make sure you are covered properly.
