Government contracts are awarded on a bid basis. To be able to bid on contracts you will need to be registered with both the federal government (federal buildings) and your state (state buildings). You can find the information on how to register online. Once registered, you will need to regularly peruse the Requests for Bids on both the federal and state web sites. To find bid opportunities on a local level for city and county buildings, watch the legal notices in your local newspaper. Most such projects are advertised locally. It can't hurt to get to know your local officals in charge of city and county purchasing. They can then alert you when a contract is about to be put out for bid. Legally, contracts have to be put out to bid; you won't be automatically hired, so you may be competing against several businesses for a job or you may be the only bidder, depending on the job. Part of the criteria your application will be judged on is how thoroughly it is written and good grammar and spelling. If those are not your strong points, you may want to hire someone to assist you in responding to bids, at least initially until you understand the process.
