Backlinks are good. Authority sites are good. Google has 200 ways of rating a website to get the page ranking. I am guessing they are constantly changing, as the internet is constantly changing. I've actually seen it mentioned in a few places that large numbers of irrelevant links can actually hurt a sites PR - common sense generally applies I think, if the site is relevant to yours and legit then a link will be benefiical, if not you're probably better off not even trying for one.

I have found in my experience that you don't have to have many backlinks, but having links from authority sites in your relevant field make all the difference. While relevancy is very important, you can make use of good content in virtually any field, but offering good content is the key. The better the site you are commenting on with regards to authority and the better your content is, the more likely you are going to get a backlink. I am kinda new to this and I try to promote my site but I do not want to spam or make troublews. I did read a lot that gov and edu links are good for linkning. Can you tell me is it better to have links from edu and gov than from related sites ? I am not sure which are more effective ... Thank you, Emilly

One good way to get .edu backlinks is to teach a night class at a local community college. You'll write a bio to go with the class description and include the link to your site. Naturally, they will post all the class info on their .edu website. Hope that helps.

Ema, Remember it's not only just about the link, but how relevant the link is. You don't want to have too many links from sites that are not relevant to your site. Google is watching to see where your links are coming from and if you only have certain types of links going to your site, it does not look natural. Another issue is, Google doesn't want to only see you linking to your own site, they want to see others linking to you and in a natural way! I'm wondering if legitmiate link building, such as forum posting etc. can lead to red flags being raised with Google if it starts finding too many new links too fast. I'm not talking about thousands of links a day or anything sliiy, but I have a site which has about 1000 incoming links from various sources and that number grows by roughly 20-30 per day at the moment. It's a new site, only been up for a couple of months and has plenty of content, and has started to rank in a few queries soon after getting indexed. I would have thought that with all these extra links appearing it would start improving in it's rankings or start ranking in other quesries but that doesn't seem to have happened. Could I be getting penalised for building links too fast?

Hi , I've always been of the belief that big G won't punish excessive un-natural link building for the simple reason that anyone can generate thousands of spam links a day to a competitors site withsoftware designed to spam forums. That way one could easily knock out their competition, I'm more inclined to think that Google will simply ignore the links. BTW .edu and.gov links don't hold the value they once did. They areusually sites with high PR as seach engines see them as authority site , which they are for the most part .
