i have worked through the online temlpate in an effort to make a business
plan. I am starting the balance sheet the first box "cash in bank" has a note
saying it must match the cash flow cash position of the 3rd year but the
balance sheet is for the first year. I do not understand.

This is just one of the suggestions; the Balance Sheet isn’t actually set for one year. You can enter any amount of time in the Start Date and End Date fields on the Balance Sheet. This validation was recommended because the Balance Sheet usually displays information up to three years and is a standard validation for business plans. Hope this helps!
