Looking for a recommendation on shipping service for my nascent e-commerce business.
I'm planning on offering free shipping, and in general my products are large but not heavy. (acoustic foam panels). I want to minimize cost, speed is not as important, since, well, it's free shipping.
Overall USPS Parcel Post tends to be the price leader. However, I have a few 'Must Haves' since I have no vehicle:
-Must pick up at business address -Must be willing to retain and use key to open door at business address -Must have online purchase for postage -Must have self-printable labels
So, I have seen services like Smartpost and Stamps.com, I have no way of knowing whether they will meet my needs. It is further complicated by the fact that USPS doesn't offer self/online printing of postage for Parcel Post.

Shipping is an important part of trying to keep your costs down. I have used some of the software before and they were all similar. I would suggest that you sign up a trial and see if they might your needs. Most of the software packages will let you use the software for 2 weeks or so without charge (except postage).
In regards to some of your other 'must have', especially the pickups, I would call up the services you are considering and speak with them. If you are doing enough volume, they may work something out with you.

Personally, I find UPS and Fedex to be really similar. I can't use USPS since they choose not to ship wine.
One thing to look into is if either service will provide the printer and ability to create your own labels as it cuts down on pick up time significantly. It's really important to us since we ship, some months at least 2,000 packages.
Lastly, I'm not sure where you're located, but look into Golden State Overnight. They're a start up shipping company, but shipping between California, Nevada and Arizona is both cheaper and always overnight. Be prepared though, unless it is a large shipment they operate on the pizza delivery model meaning that packages are often picked up and dropped off via individuals personal car.
