We have had an online business for 6 years. It is going well. Sales are up. Things are moving. I want to invest some money into advertising. We are a computer cable, computer networking type of company that is 100% online. So we are thinking, trade shows, more online advertising, print advertisement, etc. What is the biggest bang for our buck?

Since you are doing an online business then I think you should try online advertisements program like Adwords. After searching for 10 minutes, I found Business Google Adword tutorial.
It explains every bit of the program. Just choose your country/region depending upon your business locations.
Another best thing is to join Twitter, Youtube channel and Facebook. These days people spend more time there. You can give out some promotional gifts like shrits, diaries to your customer.
I think the above methods are sufficient for online advertisement.
For offline ads, you create banners, flyers or give ads in the newspaper.

Trade shows work great. Only cost $100-200 for a weekend and you will get to meet or talk with dozens if not hundreds of potential customers.

No online marketing is complete without an SEO campaign. Have you considered any SEO for your online business? If you are into it, then thats great. If not, then start thinking about getting free traffic from search engines.
Do a keyword research using Google external keyword tool and see what are people searching for in your industry. Pick a few moderately competitive terms with decent search volume, optimize your site for those keywords, and then run a link building campaign. Over time with proper SEO campaign, your site will rank high for the targeted keywords and you will get more traffic from search engines.

Adwords is a sure solution.
What has worked well in the past? I try to keep an even spread of advertising in different areas just in case one or more of my lead sources drys up. I may be a bit biased, but depending on how competitive your industry is, but a search engine optimized site can drive lots of traffic and sales your way. If you're not already using search engine advertising techniques like Google's Adwords, you may try that out. It's easy to test the waters, and you don't have to commit to long term contracts if it's not working.
Also, this past year I've experimented with radio - it has helped drive leads and build credibility for my busienss.

I haven't seen anyone mention what you need to do to go the government route. I was hoping someone would post something that would help me too. I would think with stimulus money the government could help us smaller businesses.

I think the best thing for goverment business is to get on lists, legitimate ones though. There are some out there that charge a high fee to get on the lists. We have found that being listed in the CCR has been very benefical. If you can get on that list then you can do the good ol' sales work and sell it. We have done a lot of work with the government on the small (over $2500) orders. Been helpful for us.
