My husband is currently working in Australia with his brother but we want to start his own business and be self employed as an independent contractor but we don't know where to begin.

Another good resource for you may be to use an SBA resource partner: SCORE, Small Business Development Centers. These organizations provide free business counseling and training. To find your nearest SBA resource partner, enter your zip code at SBA Direct. Hopefully this will be a good starting point.
