I did not understand the 'work in a salon and do booth rental' bit. Are you renting space out to somebody else, or are you using the space to earn money doing hair.
Are you working at the salon as an employee, and paid wages?? If yes, then you do not have to register as a business.
...but, if you are renting the booth, to provide hair dressing services to your won clients, you will have to register as a business. It does not matter if you are renting or if you own the premise.

Hi dbl3,
Have you checked out our Steps to Registering a Business page? Also, please feel free to use the Permit Me Tool to find licenses relevant to your state and industry.
If anyone else has any ideas, please add!

A quick call to your city clerk's office will tell you whether they consider you to be an independent business owner, and in need of a license, or whether they consider you to be an independent contractor or employee of the salon.
