Business License information needed......

I am starting a business where I will provide a service for customers at their home. I live in a small city North of Sacramento California and was curious of the following.

 

1) Because I am starting my business out of my home, do I need to get a business license in the city I live in even though my target area is not in my city? 

 

2) Do I need to get a business license for every city I work in?  My intention is to work Chico to Stockton to the Bay Area. Pretty much Central, Northern California.

 

I was previously the owner of a Temperature Control company and only submitted for a business license in Sacramento where I lived at the time but did work all through Central and Northern California. Of course I had a contractors license but I am not sure  what the rule is for home based service type businesses.

 

Any help will greatly be appreciated...if I cant find it here I think I need to see an attorney.

Hi Altonkirkland, Can you tell us a little more about what kind of business you want to start? Since you are operating a business from your home, you will need a business licenses from the state and city that you are operating from. Check out the Permit Me Tool to generate a list relevant to your location and industry. Here is a list of general licenses for California. Vist California's Business Permits page for more information about whether or not you need to obtain licenses in the particular cities you are planning to work in. Consulting an attorney who is familiar with the laws of you area is probably the best way to go. Does anyone else have familiar with business licenses in CA?

Thank you for the response. I will look into the links in which you provided. I am starting a home and small business inventory company. The licensing is the only thing I am not sure about. Insurance and  bonding is pretty much waiting on the licensing to be completed.
