If there's one thing I wished I'd known when I started my first business, it would be this: having a structure (not a PERSON) in place to run your business is absolutely critical.
You are not your business. Otherwise, the business only works when you work. Your employees should have an absolutely self-sufficient system in place, so that they don't need you around to move the business forward. This leaves you free to work on the whole of your business, not micromanaging or doing technical work in your business.
If you decided on the spur of the moment to run off to Aruba for a two week pleasure binge, your business should be able to continue without missing a beat.

You are so right. And just to clarify, this is not a legal structure you are talking about, but an operating structure.
I just posted in the thread about the H1N1 virus and having a plan in place, where I noted that even the CEO must have someone cross trained .... just in case. It is really great when that 'just in case' is a romantic getaway rather than an emegency -- lol.

Thanks so much for your active participation in the Business.gov Community and for providing that great advice. It's easy to say but it certainly is difficult for business owners to allow themselves to have time away from a business that they invested so much in.
