What sort of security could you offer for the loan? If you're looking to secure it against the businesses assets solely you may have some trouble as Phanio mentions. If you have other assets you can offer as security the bank may be more willing to lend.

I think you should talk with the SS office before embarking on a business to see if it is OK with them - don't want to lose your benefits. Grants are probably out of the question if your business idea is for a for-profit business. You might have a better chance with a loan given that you have outside supplimental income - might go a long way in getting approved. Call around to some local banks and ask about their SBA progams and their requirements (you will need a business plan). Moreover, depending on how much you need or the use of these funds, there are many non-bank companies that provide loans to start up businesses. You just need to find a source that matches your needs. Most banks will not provide loans to start ups (other than through the SBA's programs)
