Can you have 2 business under one LLC?

My friend has a auto dealer and repair license under a LLC. We wont to know if I open a repair shop there can it use the same name and repair license but keep the dealer and repair business separate for tax and income reasons

Forget the lawyer and accountant.  Consult your insurance provider.    I believe the proper structure here would be a 'management company' as the LLC.   John & Steve Management, LLC and then register DBAs and get business licenses from your local court house for each 'section' you plan to do business.   For instnace, a buddy and I have The Murphy Vanhoy Company in which we operate a wood shop, a web design business, a cabinet company, an HVAC company, and multiple website ventures.  Each with their own DBAs, bank accounts, licenses, etc.

Hi baker111, You can have two businesses under one LLC. However, using your friend's business name to open another shop is a different story. I highly suggest you consult a lawyer and an accountant. Sadly i cannot answer your question, however i too have a similiar question. So a reply would be appreciated. My case is a bit different though, i want to run 2 different businesses under 1 LLC, both are online businesses but sell different products.

darcchecker- You can run 2 different businesses under 1 LLC, but if your products are different, then you you are better off having separate LLCs. However, like baker111, you should consult a lawyer and accountant for your specific situation.

just to be sure, are you saying I am able to run multiple businesses that sell different products under one LLC as long as each of those businesses has its own DBA and business account?

mudd - DBA stands for 'Doing Business As,' or a fictitious name/trade name/business name that is different from your personal name, the names of your partners, or the officially registered name of your LLC or corporation. Learn more about DBAs on Business.gov

I would caution anyone looking for any real answers to contact an attorney or and an accountant-even if the price doesn't sound great right now, once you are successful you'll be glad you did. My understanding is that a DBA would be good enough for the 2nd business, as long as its primary function would be similar to the original LLC. For example a winery often has 2 different labels, however if they were doing computer programming it would make sense to have 2 different businesses. Hope that helps a bit!
