I'm new and just registered. I'm considering starting a business due to an upcoming layoff after 21 years on my job -- financial industry/customer service. I'm considering starting my own business -- whereby I would go to the customers home, place of business, nursing homes, women's fellowships etc. and do manicure and pedicure. I would also do parties ex. girls night out, tweens and teen's birthday parties etc.(Almost like a mobile service - but the customers location). At a reasonable price!!
However, I could not find any information regarding state &licenses in the state of North Carolina. All I want to do is basic pedicures & manicures and nothing else. Being that I would receive a nice continuous severance package for a year -- I wanted to start off on a part-time basis/small.
Could you please assist me with determining what's required by the state of NC for licenses etc. Also, please give me any feedback or suggestions you have concerning this business idea ASAP. Both positive and negative and pitfalls. Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

training. SCORE provides help and advice for small businesses just starting out as well as existing businesses that have been around for years.
It's a free resource and the counselors have years and years of business experience that you can take advantage of.

I agree with phanio -- contact your local SBDC. They are a big help with local and state licensing issues. A SCORE office is another option. They may be able to help, too.
I would add that in some states you must be a licensed beautician to give manicures and pedicures as a business. That requires training and passing a test.
But again, the SBDC or SCORE offices should be able to help.
I would suggest you find a local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in your area. You can search for these centers online or on the SBA website.
There services are free and are designed for new companies just like your. They can help you answer all the questions you have. Plus, by using a local office - they would know all the local licenesing requirements.
Keeping in my that the simplier the better. You business could easily be set up and run from home - saving you expenses as you ramp up business.
These SBDCs can also help you research and develop a marketing plan - to help ensure your spending your marketing funds most efficiently.
