Hello all,

 

I am in Los Angeles, CA. I am looking at starting to make custom cross stitch pieces and sell them. I don't expect to make a lot. I am wondering do I need to get a business license for this?

Also if I go through a website like Etsy.com does that change anything?

Registering as a business will also help your 'legitimacy' - both to your customers and for yourself!

Starchic511, Even though you don't except to make a lot, the IRS will still consider it a business. Here are the 10 Steps to Starting a Business in CA. You do not need a business license, but you will need to register your business. You will need to get all the proper tax ids and the information on Sales Tax. Sales tax is done through your state and local government. It looks etsy.com you can set a sales tax rate, so you will need to do that after you register. If you sell consistently products it must be registered as a business even if you don't make a lot of money from it. You don't want problems with the IRS!
