Let me start with saying right out front that I am a felon. Believe me when I say I am NOT proud of it, it actually disgusts me. I had a few really bad years and I really hurt ANY kind of normal life because of it. However,
Since my release 6yrs ago I have not been in trouble of any kind. But I have been fighting the hardest fight of my life just to be able to have a life.
When my sentence was over, I completed my parole successfully I thought WooHoo, I can finally get on with life. BUT to my surprise Im still being punished for my crimes.
Society complains about recidivism, (revolving doors for felons), and I do understand that maybe 5% of releases are seriously wanting to change their lives. But how do we go about it when 'society' won't give us jobs. The end result is going back to what you know just to survive, ie, 'revolving doors'.
And if society would stop to think, felons are going to be one of their best employees because it is so hard for us to find jobs to keep us out of trouble.
My most recent experience was applying at a Faith based hospital in the cafiteria. I was hired in 2 days of the interview, based on who I am, my experience, my answers to their questions but as soon as my paperwork got to HR dept, they resended their offer of the position and told me to come back when I had been released for 7 yrs. Like I was going to be any different in 1 more year.
I have been living with my exhusband, bless his heart, he has been supporting me. Otherwise I know I would be back in prison.
When is my sentence really over. 6 years is not long enough for society?
