I think a few important issues come up when selecting a domain name.When I had my first commercial website built about five years ago, I asked the SEO/Manager of the web development company how I should name the domain. Interestingly, he mentioned that having targeted keywords in the domain could slightly improve SERPS, but that it wasn't that big of deal. As I look back on that discussion today, reflecting on the battle for top placements which I am now involved, I am glad I went with my hunch and chose a domain name with critical targeted keywords. I think that keyword-based domain names are important, even if you only receive a small benefit from it. How many site owners with SERPS on the first page of Google are furiously trying to move up even one or two spots, and now wish they chose a domain name which provided a little boost? I think the right domain name can be critical, especially in fiercely competitive online markets.As much as many SEO experts say that the name of the domain is not significant in 2011, take a look at your own targeted keywords on Google SERPS. Typically, you still find a few sites in great SERP placement, with nothing other than the right keywords in the domain. Imagine how a site with useful content, appropriate backlinks, and the right domain name would do..... While Google changes the weight of its 200 or so factors regularly, keywords in the domain name are currently a pretty important component of the SERPS. Another important issue relates to business succession plans/future plans to sell your website. If your domain name emphasizes your own name, which is common in many industries, and your site becomes extremely successful, this may dramatically impair the value of the domain if you plan to sell it (along with the business) in the future.
Any seo specialist worth his salt should know that the domain name is the most important place for keywords. Then again, Google's algorithms could've been very different 5 years ago
I think that keyword in the domain name has some affect and can help your rankings a little. However its significance its declining every year and it probably won't have any affect in the next few years, so if i would buy a domain name at this moment, i wouldn't consider it too much...

While having the keywords you want to target are important and can help your organic ranking for those particular keywords, there are no specific guarantee's. In addition, there are many examples online where a more generic or even branded domain outranks a domain name for a specific phrase. While the domain name is important, the overall content of the site and structure is more important in my humble opinion.
I've had clients with brand based domains that I've been able to rank significantly higher in Google against competitors who were using exact keyword domains (competing for the same phrase). There are many other factors to consider in addition to the domain name for web success.

Well i have seen that having certain keywords in the domain do help at times. For one of my sites I sa a lot of traffic comeing in from day one. However when a bought the same domain name with a different extension there was not much traffic coming into it....... I would like to conclude that yes there is a positive impact of having certain keywords in the domain name.....

For example, if I have a really good business idea in a highly competitive area, and a lot of start up capital, I would go for a brand name. On the other hand, if I think competition is low and I don't have that much starting capital, I would go for the keyword domain. Although, I would never use a keyword domain with several hyphens, it just feels spammy.

I would like to say that it would be nice if you manage to register a domain name containing keywords relevant to your online business. These domains are usually busy or offered at high price at various domain marketplaces, but a domain with right keywords will be definitely good investment. Registering such a domain you will be able to simplify your future SEO work on a website signifficantly.
