We are setting up meetings for some people that do SEO professionally. Are there any specific questions or qualifications we should be asking or looking for?

you. There are plenty of legitimate SEO companies out there, and none of them
solicit business by cold calling clients.

services are selling empty promises, there are MANY legitimate SEO
professionals that do cold call. Unfortunately, we get a bad rap because of
all of the snake oil salesmen that are out there. I stop by local businesses
that I already frequent and occasionally call a company that I would like to
deal with after I have gone home to check out their online presence to see if
I could help.
Do your research. Never sign up for anything just because someone approaches
you. Remember that the 98% of so called SEO experts have read a quick
tutorial or bought an online eBook that is probably out of date before they
read it. SEO can be very confusing, but don't settle for empty promises. Look
for someone that will come in and sit down with you to explain how they can
help you specifically.
Do not assume that your web developer has the slightest clue what modern SEO
entails. Most web developers will list SEO on their services list, but the
most they know about current practices are that they should fill in the META
Title, META Keywords, and META description in their template system. There is
far more involved with On Page SEO than this. In general, they have little to
no knowledge of Off Page SEO, or how to build up your reputation and
authority over the internet.
Thanks,
AK

Ask them to provide references. SEO tends to be a great place for snake oil
salesman to work, so understanding what type of clients and website designs
they've completed is totally important.
