I'm not interested in more SEO or affiliate marketing nonsense. I'd like to hear how other businesses market themselves successfully using email programs, networking, and partnerships.
Building an email list will take a while, it's not going to happen overnight.
SEO has got a bad name because most of it pollutes the internet with garbage
content, just to get links back. But it doesn't have to be like that. You can
use:
- forum posting (the smart type, not spam)
- other type of content producing: blogs, social media, pinterest, etc.
This is SEO, but the smart type, spreading the word about yourself.
I have tried all kinds to techniques to build my own nutritional product
business. Finally, after writing hundreds of articles about nutrition and
weight loss with no success, I turned to PPC on bing and google. I found PPC
much less expensive when limiting the area to 25 miles surrounding my office
as compared to nationwide.
I have built my business using 2 main methods - 1) pay per click advertising and 2) email marketing. To accomplish this I provide something with enough value that visitors will give me their name and email address and permission to email them. Then I send them information they find valuable every month. I have many clients that have received my monthly email for anywhere from 6 months to 4 years before they were ready to make a purchase and in many cases when they meet me they start by saying "i've been reading your emails for the last _ years and that's why I chose to work with you".
I also do other methods of marketing but this one accounts for 90+ percent of my business.
I agree with Vicki72146, consider hiring a marketing consultant to figure out what channels and method fit your own skills and qualities and work for your customers. I discussed SEO with a friend who runs a job counselling company and gave her a negative advice on webmarketing, both seo and ppc. The main long term customers are government and big companies, they dont use Google Search and work on peer referral and trust. So use a clean business presentation website with agenda and credentials, a good clean online and offline reputation, use any networking opportunity but focus on the gov, semi-gov and big companies, and like MSR says, send a regular update, 'the money is in the list'. A regular reminder so your potential customers get used to having you around in their network, build association.

Depending on your industry/niche holding a seminar or mini convention by inviting a number of chamber of commerce members in your surrounding area is a great way to begin networking and prospecting potential clients.

While Affiliate marketing is about selling other people's products, anyone doing business these days with any presence online...is affected by SEO or The Way Search Engines View Your Business.
What we do is first understand what value your customers get from your product or service. Build a clear message that offers that distinction. Then consider a strategic marketing tool...website, brochure, sell sheet, email document that best supports your customer engagement and brand message.
Networking is best when your target audience is present...a room full of sales people may not fit that profile.
Take on two actions each week that moves you closer to engagement whether improving your business process, quality, effeciency or attending a local Meetup with quality prospects.
Also, do ask Customers and partners for testimonials to display your proof of performance. That stuff is gold!
