question, just my thoughts on making it in home computer support these days -
you will need sound knowledge and skills. You can use your own name and not
register a business. You will still pay tax.

I have experince to do this job. Simply I have more than 5 years experince. In my carrer I never faced any difficulty to register this business. My advise if you can hide your business from more publicity like; visiting cards etc. so you will not face any problem.

People have already mentioned to check on licensing requirements in your state. Most states would not require a license for that service. However, if sales tax is due in your state for such a service, then you would need file with the proper tax department. However, one point that you should consider is that forming an LLC or corporation is not a big expense. You can usually do it without a lawyer, and an LLC or corporation can often shield you from various types of liabilty, which value can greatly offset the expense.

You should at least register an assumed name with your state or county - you can find information and forms on their websites. I also suggest that you market to other students especially thoses on campus. Get your name out there and word will spread fast. Keep separate records for your income and expenses - then file the self- employed forms with your tax returns. If you really start to grow, then you should look at forming an LLC or similar organization.

Hi your question is about legalities, but you also need to consider a lot about pulbic liability and gurantees. I have used small computer shops for repair and I do this because sometimes its a good price, but also because I can create a relationship with the owners. the personal touch is really important in the computer industry as is covering yourself against things such as if you accidently destroy data or the computer, you dont want to get sued if you dont have any business cover.

You can do business under your name and even use your own bank account. Legally, you need to check with your city hall to determine if a business license is required. Any time you are building a business, you want to make sure you are legal. If you are doing business under a different name, then you would need to at least register a DBA - doing business as. If you are making money from a business activity, you need to register your business name and entity type. In many states you do that through your secretary of state's office and the forms should be on-line. In most cases, it is a fairly quick process. If you will be a sole proprietorship, you don't need to register an entity type, only your business name. You must pay taxes on all income from business activities. Registering your business will allow you to take deductions for business-related expenses, including mileage for travel to clients' homes (be sure you keep accurate records).
