I would think a periodic table would consist of a little more detail then
just these four things regarding SEO. Yes when you boil it down to the
basics, you are left with On page and Off page SEO. You can have great on
page SEO, but if you have no backlinks from other sites pointing to your
page, you simply will not rank. The same goes for the opposite extreme:
Plenty of great backlinks but no relevant content on your page.
If you are going after a certain keyword, make sure it is somewhere on the
page you are trying to rank for otherwise Google will have trouble seeing
your site as relevant for that keyword.
You have to stay on top of the latest changes with Google's algorithm. Some
of the SEO techniques that worked yesterday might not work today. On page SEO
is important but there is only so much optimizing you can do on your website.
I say that you need to focus 70 percent on your off page SEO.

As others have mentioned above SEOmoz is a great tool. I think the on-page
SEO is very important. Everything must be done right, no black hat techniques
at all, with all the Google updates taking place many sites have been
deindexed completely so it pays to do it right and stay safe.

nothing to do with SEO. I realize this is an old post but the information
provided here is incorrect. Please do a bit more research on the subject
before giving advise.
