I am thinking of starting an online business selling hair accessories,
jewelry, candles, soaps, lotions and other various items. I will be making my
own products and there is no sales tax in Alaska. I live in Alaska, but I
work on the road, so I'm all over the country and sometimes in Canada. Do I
need a business license? And if so, what kind do I need?
You obtain a business license where your business is located, so from the
city clerk in your city of residence. Not all cities license all businesses,
so be sure to check. You also need to register your business name and entity
type with your state. Because you are crossing international borders, you may
need the guidance of a counselor at a small business development center or a
SCORE office in your area.

Your local Small Business Development Center or SCORE, two of SBA's resource partners are great resources as well. They're located across the country and provide free business counseling and answers. Visit our local assistance guide to find your local SBA resource partners by entering your zip code. Another approach that may be useful is talking to a mentor who could offer you specific guidance.
