I started a vending machine business a few months ago. My approach is to go into busier locations that almost all already have vending machines in them. I bought machines from HealthyVending as they had all of the options I was looking for. My pitch is to highlight the health risks involved with obesity, and have data supporting that up to 50% of the calories that Americans ingest come from outside the home. Schools everywhere in the US are pulling soda machines out, and replacing them with healthier alternatives. I haven't tried to get into any schools as yet as the competition is fierce. Research, research, and research. You can visit a local small business development center (SBDC - free to use) that can help you with traffic counts in your area. Get and talk to people - see what they want and where they want it in your area.

Well, high traffic areas are notable, but that doesn't mean that traffic will result in return-sales. For example, places like cafeterias or work place lunch rooms are your bread and butter, anywhere were people go to eat and can locate food or water\soda\etc to drink. You'll also need to consider the start-up cost of each machine, which can run in the several thousands, stocking inventory and replacement of empty inventory. Not to mention any specific permits or licences you'll need for that specific town\county\state.
