Do I need a Business License

I am looking into creating a website so that people interested in Bicycling canshare information and find information. Do I need a Business License for this website if I sell space on the site for advertising? If so, what type of License?

This is a helpful reply. I have several websites that are just now beginning to make money. I think I need a business licesnse.

Yes. Anything that can give you profit or income must be reported as earning and does you need to have a business license. You can go either a sole proprietor or better yet go LLC so that your personal property wont be tied up to your business if you got sued or something bad happens

For details on sole proprietor or LLC, take a look at the Incorporation Section. In regards to business license, those are handled at a state and local level. When you go through the steps of registering your business, you should be able to fine out if you need any licenses. JimD

There is a difference between a business license and registering your business name and entity type. Business licenses are issued by cities and counties. Some require all businesses to have a license, which is usually renewed annually. Other cities and counties license only certain types of businesses, such as eating and drinking establishments. You can find out if you need a license by making a quick call to your local city clerk's office. Because you plan to make money from your site, you will need to register a business name and entity type (sole proprietor, LLC, etc.) In many states you register your name and entity type with your secretary of state. In other locations, you register with your county.
