Do I need multiple licenses to do out-call or sub-contract work?

I'm a new self-employed massage therapist.  I plan to set up my practice in a rented space and will, of course, need a business license there.  However, I also plan to work as a sub-contractor in another massage business in a neighboring municipality.  Do I need a separate business license in that municipality in order to work as a sub-contractor? 

 

Due to the nature of the massage business, it's not un-heard of for an LMT to work as a sub-contractor in multiple locations in nearby towns, (i.e. at a spa or chiropractic clinic or salon) simultaneously.  Is it necessary to obtain business licenses from each individual town you may do sub-contract work in?  Or can you work in multiple areas on a single, central business license? 

 

If this varies from place to place, with whom should I check?

A quick phone call to your city clerk's office and to the city clerk in the nearby community where you plan to work should answer your question. Many communities license both the business location and the individuals that work in the business. Also check with your state bureau of occupational licenses. Some states license massage therapists at the state level; others only at the local level. If you are licensed at the local level, you may need a license in every community where you work unless the communities recognize each other's licenses. The city clerk can answer these questions for you.
