There are major companies such as Amazon that utilize affiliates. The big companies don't pay as much commission as the smaller firms may, but to me it's proof that the affiliate business is here to stay for at least the near future.
There is nothing sure in this world. Giants company can tumble anytime. But the online affiliate logic will definitely be here to stay. Since it is cheaper for companies to pay an affliate commission than do all sort of advertising and try to reach out to all sectors.
A person/website who is an affliate of a certain business would do its best to promote the said product in order to earn money (Its one of the cheapest form of advertising\employee, since they only pay you if you made a sale commission basis).
As long as there are peoples who want to make money by promoting affiliate programs, they won't go away.

There is a lot of competition out there, but having the correct tools and ingredients is vital in that first step.
No matter what your respective niche is - as long as you move forward in the right direction - you can and definately will succeed.

I think what he means is, is affiliate marketing for you and I dead? There's alot of talk on the web about those that do affiliate marketing professionally to drive revenue through pay per click and so on. If that's what you mean than yes I think as more companies come on the web and price bidding goes up per click then the opportunity for driving traffic through ppc to affiliate ads will go down.

I don't think that affiliate marketing will ever die... It may change and develop but the basics will remain.
Its like when you buy a car - You never buy it directly from the factory, you always need a 'middle man'. Same with affiliate marketing- One way or the other the big companies will use 'middle man' for increase selling and reach as much as clients as they can.
